The Challenge
AsBuilt was contracted to provide point cloud development and 3D solid modeling services for an industrial tape manufacturing facility. The plant required accurate documentation of existing conditions to support future engineering, equipment modifications, and facility planning.
The manufacturing environment included complex structural framing, process equipment, utilities, and production lines operating within tight spatial constraints. Existing documentation was incomplete and did not fully reflect field conditions, creating potential risks for retrofit design and system upgrades.
The project required:
- Accurate capture of structural and mechanical systems
- Reliable dimensional data for engineering planning
- Conversion of scan data into usable 3D models
- Reduced need for repeated site visits
The Solution
High-Resolution 3D Laser Scanning
AsBuilt conducted detailed terrestrial laser scanning (LiDAR) of the designated production areas. The scan captured:
- Structural steel members and support framing
- Process equipment and machinery
- Utility systems and service lines
- Overhead clearances and spatial relationships
The scan data was registered and processed into a high-accuracy point cloud, followed by comprehensive quality checks to ensure modeling readiness.

3D Solid Modeling
Using the verified point cloud as a reference, AsBuilt developed detailed 3D models representing:
- Structural members
- Key manufacturing equipment
- Utilities and routing systems
- Relevant architectural and mechanical components
The modeling converted raw scan data into structured, usable geometry, enabling engineering teams to plan upgrades, evaluate space constraints, and develop retrofit designs with confidence.
Deliverables
- Registered point cloud
- 3D laser scan dataset
- 3D solid model of structural, equipment, and utility components
Results & Impact
The project delivered accurate, engineering-grade digital documentation of the industrial tape manufacturing facility. By leveraging laser scanning and 3D modeling, AsBuilt reduced measurement uncertainty, supported efficient planning, and provided a reliable digital foundation for future plant modifications.
