The Challenge
AsBuilt was contracted to provide 3D laser scanning and modeling services to support engineering for a multi-purpose sports and events arena in Florida. The facility required structural verification and design coordination for the installation of new ribbon LED signage.
The proposed mounting locations—along the curtain wall and within the crow’s nest structure—presented structural and spatial challenges. The engineering team required accurate existing-condition data to:
- Verify structural attachment points
- Confirm load paths and mounting elevations
- Identify interferences with utilities and structural members
- Ensure safe and precise installation in a high-visibility venue
The arena’s complex architecture and overhead infrastructure required detailed as-built documentation to reduce risk during design and installation.
The Solution
High-Resolution Laser Scanning
AsBuilt performed targeted terrestrial laser scanning (LiDAR) of the curtain wall and crow’s nest areas. The scan captured:
- Structural framing and support members
- Existing mounting surfaces
- Electrical and utility routing
- Architectural interfaces
- Overhead access constraints
The data was processed into a registered, quality-verified point cloud, creating an exact digital representation of the mounting environment.
3D As-Built Modeling
Using the processed scan data, AsBuilt developed a detailed 3D as-built model (DWG format) of the relevant structural and architectural components. The model provided:
- Accurate dimensional verification
- Mounting surface analysis
- Clearance validation
- Engineering-ready design backgrounds
This allowed engineers to confidently design and position the new ribbon LED signage system while minimizing installation risk.
Deliverables
- Raw laser scan data
- Post-processed, registered point cloud
- Photorealistic 3D visualization
- 3D as-built model (DWG)
Results & Impact
The project delivered precise as-built documentation to support safe and efficient installation of ribbon LED signage within a high-profile arena environment. By leveraging laser scanning and 3D modeling, AsBuilt reduced engineering uncertainty, improved coordination, and ensured accurate structural integration.
