AsBuilt for Valve Replacement

3D laser scanning and modeling for valve placement in a hydropower plant piping system, delivering accurate as-built data and coordinated installation planning.

The Challenge

AsBuilt was contracted to capture the as-is conditions of an existing piping system within a hydropower generation facility. The plant required installation of a new valve within an operational system; however, accurate and up-to-date drawings were not available.

The absence of reliable documentation created significant risks:

  • Incorrect valve placement or misalignment
  • Interference with existing piping and structural elements
  • Delays during fabrication and installation
  • Increased likelihood of field rework
  • Limited coordination between engineering and operations teams

To ensure successful execution, the project required precise dimensional data and a reliable 3D design background.

The Solution

3D Laser Scanning & Point Cloud Development

AsBuilt performed high-resolution terrestrial laser scanning (LiDAR) of the existing piping system. The scan captured:

  • Pipe routing and elevations
  • Structural supports
  • Adjacent equipment
  • Utilities and spatial constraints

The data was registered and processed into an accurate point cloud, representing exact field conditions at the time of capture.

3D Modeling & Design Coordination

The point cloud was converted into detailed 3D solid models to create engineering-ready design backgrounds. A Navisworks model was developed to support collaborative review and coordination.

Using the model:

  • The new valve was positioned virtually within the existing system
  • Clearances and tie-in locations were verified
  • Multiple layout configurations were evaluated
  • Final placement was approved by plant operations and maintenance teams

Fabrication drawings were generated directly from the finalized 3D model, ensuring alignment between design intent and installation.

Quick Facts

Shared Access
Scan data and models were shared digitally with the mechanical design team, enabling accurate valve placement and remote collaboration.

Project Planning
Operations and maintenance teams reviewed the valve placement within the 3D environment prior to approval.

Reduced Rework
Virtual layout evaluation eliminated field conflicts and ensured fabrication accuracy.

Installation Planning
The finalized model supported scaffolding, rigging, and installation sequencing planning before field mobilization.

Deliverables

  • Registered point cloud
  • Navisworks coordination model
  • 3D solid modeling of piping system and valve placement

Results & Impact

The project delivered accurate digital documentation and coordinated 3D modeling to support valve installation within an active hydropower facility. By leveraging laser scanning and model-based planning, AsBuilt minimized installation risk, improved cross-team coordination, and reduced rework during execution.
