AsBuilt for a Chemical Facility

3D laser scanning and solid modeling for a chemical facility, delivering accurate point cloud data and engineering-ready 3D documentation for upgrades and planning.

The Challenge

AsBuilt was contracted to provide point cloud development and 3D solid modeling services for a large-scale chemical processing facility. The client required accurate documentation of existing conditions to support engineering analysis, future modifications, and capital improvement planning.

The facility contained complex process systems, structural steel, mechanical equipment, and extensive utility networks. Many areas had undergone incremental changes over time, resulting in incomplete or outdated documentation. The project required:

  • Full-facility reality capture
  • Accurate dimensional verification
  • Reliable modeling of structural and process systems
  • Usable 3D data for engineering workflows

The Solution

Comprehensive 3D Laser Scanning

AsBuilt performed high-resolution terrestrial laser scanning (LiDAR) across the entire facility. The scan captured:

  • Structural steel framing and supports
  • Process vessels and equipment
  • Piping systems and utilities
  • Cable trays, conduit, and overhead infrastructure
  • Access platforms and elevation relationships

The data was registered and processed into a detailed, quality-verified point cloud.

3D Solid Modeling

Following quality assurance checks, the point cloud was prepared for modeling. AsBuilt converted the scan data into accurate 3D modeled geometry, representing:

  • Structural members
  • Key process equipment
  • Utility systems
  • Relevant architectural and mechanical components

The resulting models provided structured, engineering-ready digital assets that could be used for retrofit design, clash detection, and long-term facility planning.

Deliverables

  • Registered point cloud
  • 3D laser scan dataset
  • 3D solid model of structural, equipment, and utility systems

Results & Impact

The project delivered a comprehensive digital representation of the chemical facility, enabling precise engineering coordination and improved planning for future upgrades. By leveraging laser scanning and solid modeling, AsBuilt reduced uncertainty, improved data reliability, and provided a scalable digital foundation for ongoing operations and expansion.
