AsBuilt of Bunker Discharge Chutes

AsBuilt used 3D laser scanning and modeling to support bunker discharge chute redesign at a coal-fired power plant.

The Challenge

A power plant was experiencing recurring coal pluggage issues during discharge from bunker chutes to the feeders. To address the problem, the plant planned to redesign and replace the existing discharge chutes.

Accurate as-built documentation of the existing chute geometry and surrounding infrastructure was required to support effective redesign and ensure the new chutes would integrate cleanly with the existing system.

The Solution

AsBuilt conducted detailed 3D laser scanning of the bunker discharge chute areas, capturing all relevant structural, equipment, and utility features. The scan data was processed into registered point clouds, providing a reliable digital representation of the existing conditions.

Using this data, AsBuilt developed accurate 3D models of the existing chutes, which were used as reference for design and planning. This approach ensured that all existing features and constraints were fully understood before new chute geometry was developed.

Key Outcomes

  • Accurate As-Built Chute Geometry
Scan-based models replaced incomplete or outdated documentation.
  • Improved Redesign Planning
Designers worked from verified conditions when developing new chute configurations.
  • Reduced Installation Risk
Early understanding of interfaces minimized surprises during fabrication and installation.
  • Better Material Flow Outcomes
Accurate modeling supported solutions focused on eliminating pluggage.

Deliverables

  • Raw Scan Data
  • Registered and Processed Point Cloud
  • 3D Model of Existing Discharge Chutes

Why It Matters

Material flow issues like chute pluggage directly affect plant reliability. By capturing precise as-built conditions, AsBuilt enabled a data-driven redesign approach that reduced risk and improved confidence in the final installation.
