The Challenge
A wood products manufacturing facility required accurate as-built documentation of an existing dust collection system to support the design and installation of new ducting and equipment. The facility was decades old, and previous system modifications were undocumented, leaving no reliable drawings to design from. Traditional field measurement would have been time-consuming and risked inaccuracies that could lead to installation conflicts.
The Solution
AsBuilt captured the as-is conditions of the dust collection system using high-resolution 3D laser scanning and converted the data into a detailed 3D model. The model was used as an accurate design background for routing new ductwork and placing additional equipment. All routing and layout decisions were completed in the 3D environment, allowing clashes to be identified and resolved before installation.
Project Highlights
- As-Built 3D Modeling: Delivered an accurate digital representation of the existing dust collection system where no reliable drawings existed.
- Clash-Free Duct Routing: Enabled precise duct routing and equipment placement, eliminating installation-phase conflicts.
- Installation Planning: Supported contractor planning and sequencing in 3D, improving efficiency and crew safety.
- Engineering Calculations: Provided reliable geometry for accurate airflow and transport velocity calculations.
Deliverables
- Post-processed point cloud
- Navisworks 3D model
- Clash detection analysis
