AsBuilt of Freeze Protection Curtains

AsBuilt used high-accuracy 3D laser scanning to support engineered freeze protection curtain design at a Georgia power plant.

The Challenge

A power plant in Georgia required the design and installation of freeze protection curtains across five separate shelter locations. Each installation needed to meet strict project specifications and structural requirements, making accurate field measurements essential.

Given the variability between shelters and the presence of existing structural, mechanical, and utility elements, traditional measurement methods introduced risk around fitment, anchor placement, and installation efficiency.

The Solution

AsBuilt, a division of Acensium, conducted high-accuracy 3D laser scanning at each shelter location, capturing all relevant structural, equipment, and utility details. After post-processing and quality verification, the scan data was used to develop precise 3D as-built models.

Acensium’s engineering team then performed a structural review and produced PE-stamped drawings for each shelter. To support bidding and installation, fabrication drawings were developed along with detailed pier and anchor location plans, ensuring accurate placement by the installing contractor.

Key Outcomes

  • Accurate Fitment Across Multiple Locations
Scan-based models ensured each curtain system was designed to match existing conditions.
  • Engineered, Code-Compliant Designs
Structural reviews resulted in PE-stamped drawings suitable for construction and permitting.
  • Improved Installation Efficiency
Precise pier and anchor layouts reduced field adjustments and installation risk.
  • Integrated Engineering Workflow
Scanning, modeling, and engineering were delivered within a single organization, reducing coordination gaps.

Deliverables

  • Raw Scan Data
  • Post-Processed Point Cloud
  • Photorealistic 3D Views
  • 3D As-Built Model (DWG)

Why It Matters

Freeze protection systems must fit precisely and perform reliably in critical infrastructure environments. By combining high-accuracy reality capture with in-house engineering and PE review, AsBuilt and Acensium delivered a compliant, constructible solution with reduced risk and higher confidence.
