Asbuilt of a Power Block

AsBuilt3D laser scanning and solid modeling for an electrical plant power block, delivering Recap point clouds and accurate 3D models for engineering and upgrades.

The Challenge

AsBuilt was contracted to capture comprehensive 3D laser scan data for point cloud development and solid modeling of a power block within an electrical generation plant. The client required accurate existing-condition documentation to support engineering analysis, system upgrades, and long-term asset management.

The power block environment contained complex structural framing, mechanical systems, piping networks, cable trays, and heavy equipment operating within tight tolerances. Legacy documentation did not fully reflect current field conditions, increasing the risk of:

  • Dimensional discrepancies
  • Coordination conflicts during design
  • Installation inefficiencies
  • Engineering uncertainty

High-accuracy data collection was essential to ensure reliable modeling and downstream use.

The Solution

Industry-Compliant Terrestrial Laser Scanning

AsBuilt deployed terrestrial laser scanning (LiDAR) technology in accordance with industry best practices and quality standards. The scan captured:

  • Structural steel systems
  • Turbine and generator components
  • Piping and ductwork
  • Electrical infrastructure and cable trays
  • Elevation relationships and spatial clearances

All data collection followed controlled workflows to ensure consistency, accuracy, and complete coverage.

Post-Processing & Quality Control

The scan data was exported to AsBuilt’s office for:

  • Registration and alignment
  • Noise reduction and data cleaning
  • Quality assurance verification
  • Preparation for modeling workflows

The resulting registered point cloud provided a photorealistic, high-fidelity digital representation of the power block.

3D Solid Modeling

Using the verified point cloud, AsBuilt developed detailed 3D solid models representing structural members, equipment, and utility systems. Each modeled component was compared directly against the point cloud to confirm dimensional accuracy prior to delivery.

The final models were delivered in the client’s specified formats to support engineering, retrofit planning, and coordination.

Deliverables

  • Registered point cloud (Recap file format with photorealistic 3D views)
  • 3D solid modeling of power block systems

Results & Impact

The project delivered accurate, engineering-grade digital documentation of the electrical plant’s power block. By leveraging industry-compliant laser scanning and rigorous quality control, AsBuilt provided reliable data for future design coordination, system upgrades, and facility planning.
